Obviously, the most important first step is to see your physician. So that you can get individual help. Treatment options for Depression fall into two categories:
- Counseling (psychotherapy)
- Medications
It's wonderful that you are doing research on the web. But ONLY your physician can prescribe the right treatment for you. Please don't delay calling and setting an appointment right now.
Get the Most Out of Your Treatment Once your physician has prescribed a treatment, there are things that you can do to help get the most out of it.
- Avoid making major life decisions until your treatment begins to take effect
- Make sure your physician knows about all medications you are taking
- Exercise! Even a simple walk outside will have a positive effect on depression. Build this into your daily routine.
- Get out of the house and be around people.
- Don't give up on your treatment. Treatment takes time and will only be effective if you commit to staying the course. That includes, keeping all of your designated appointments and taking prescribed medications.
- Keep a journal. It may be very helpful to record your personal thoughts and observations about your treatment.
